HAMBURG, N.Y. -- The Thiel College Men's soccer team defeated the Hilbert College Hawks 2-1 Friday evening.
Thiel advances to 2-4 on the regular season, as the Hawks drop to 2-1-1.
After a back and forth first half of shots, Thiel got on the board first off a penalty kick goal by Ryan Fisher (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley) to give the Tomcats the 1-0 lead in the 64th minute of the game.
In the 76th minute, sophomore Andy Mangold (Bradford, Pa./Bradford Area) netted another for Thiel off an assist from Mitchell Strauss (Bradford, Pa./Bradford Area).
The Hawks got one behind the keeper with eight minutes remaining in the contest but ultimately fell short to the Tomcats.
Thiel out shot Hilbert 17-9 throughout the game but a second half 11-5 from the Tomcats gave them the advantage they needed to secure the victory.
Fisher, Strauss and Pierson Badowski (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) led the offense, all with three shots.
Thiel was able to get multiple shots off by a number of different Tomcats including Mandgold, Mason Melaragno (Erie, Pa./Fairview), Grant Becker (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted), Giovanni Rossi Jr. (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory), Logan Gordon (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory), Maxwell Kovacik (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock Area), Zack Loeser (Long Island, N.Y./Rocky Point) and Micah Fortney (Palmyra, Pa./Mount Calvary Christian).
Goalkeeper Bryce Stefanowicz (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) was faced with four shots on goal and made three saves.
The Tomcats return to action on Wednesday, September 17 when they host Penn State New Kensington from Alumni Stadium at Stober Field at 7:30 p.m.
