GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Thiel College Men's Soccer team defeated the Penn State New Kensington Lions 2-1 Wednesday night at Alumni Stadium.
Thiel advances to 3-4 on the season, as the Lions drop to 1-3-2.
With less than one minute remaining in the first half, freshman Micah Fortney (Palmyra, Pa./Mount Calvary Christian) scored his first career goal to give the Tomcats the 1-0 lead.
Thiel's defense was locked down and held the Lions to zero shots in the first half, out shooting them 27-3 overall.
In the 55th minute, New Kensington evened out the score 1-1.
Dominating the offensive end, Mitchell Strauss (Bradford, Pa./Bradford Area) was able to get one behind the net to score the game-winning goal. Strauss was assisted by Giovanni Rossi Jr. (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory)
Fortney had a total of five shots, three of which were on goal. Pierson Badowski (Grove City, Pa./Grove City) and Andy Mangold (Bradford, Pa./Bradford Area) had four shots each, and Strauss and Maxwell Kovacik (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock Area) had three.
In the net, Bryce Stefanowicz (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) was only faced with three shots.
Thiel returns to action on Wednesday, September 24 as the open conference play at Hiram College at 8:30 p.m.
