LATROBE, Pa. -- The Thiel College Softball team swept the Saint Vincent College Bearcats 6-0 and 9-8 in their Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader Wednesday evening.
Thiel advances to 12-8 on the regular season and 6-4 in conference play, as Saint Vincent falls to 13-13 overall and 1-7 in the PAC.
Game 1
Mackenzie Herman (Greenville, Pa./Reynolds) doubled to right field while Abby Rottman (Hilliards, Pa./Moniteau) bunted but was safe, bringing runners to first and third early in the top of the second inning.
Alaina Fedder (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) reached the bags from a fielders choice and a throwing error on the shortstop to bring Herman home and advance Rottman to third. Ava Gilmore (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex Area) hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, bringing Rottman home for an RBI and a 2-0 Thiel lead.
In the top of the third, Kylie Heid (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) doubled to right center field bringing in Jensen Stehlik (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Nordonia) who was walked and stole second. Heid scored from a single from Herman.
Thiel took the 5-0 lead from another sacrifice fly from Fedder, bringing Herman home.
Herman hit her fourth home run of the season to cap Thiel's score to 6-0 and take home the game one victory.
Rottman went 4-for-4 on the day with one run. Herman had three hits off four at bats, 2 RBIs and 3 runs.
Pitcher Becca Landis (Kinsman, Ohio/Mathews) secured her seventh win of the season with 7.0 IP and five strikeouts.
Game 2
After scoring two runs in the first, Saint Vincent bounced back quick to take the 4-2 lead.
Two home runs from Herman and Heid in the top of the third inning give Thiel back their lead to 5-4.
With two outs in the fourth, Kayley Risser (Reynoldsville, Pa./Dubois Central Catholic) doubled to center field, advancing Fedder to third. Stehlik singled to deep right field to bring both Risser and Fedder home to increase their lead to 7-5.
A home run and four hits from the Bearcats in the sixth inning give them the 8-7 lead they have been inching toward.
In the top of the seventh inning, Risser and Stehlik both singled to left field, giving Thiel runners on first and second. Dani Ficeti (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) doubles to deep right center field, to bring them both home and give Thiel the 9-8 lead.
Thiel hangs on in the bottom of seventh, making a fielders choice play at second and securing their sixth PAC win of the season.
Fedder pitched 5.0 innings, threw 87 pitches and had one strikeout. Landis threw from 2.0 innings and also had one strikeout.
The Tomcats are back in action on Sunday, April 13 when they host the Allegheny College Gators. The PAC doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Softball Field in Tomcat Park.
