GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Thiel College Women's Lacrosse junior Hayden Wightman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) scored Thiel's game-winning goal in overtime to take the 15-14 victory over Franciscan Tuesday night in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match-up.
Thiel advances to 11-3 on the regular season and 5-3 in the PAC, as the Barons drop to 6-8 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
Franciscan overtook the fourth quarter, outscoring Thiel 5-1, Ashlyn Wightman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) with Thiel's only goal. With 2:30 left in the fourth quarter, Franciscan tied the game at 14 a piece.
Thiel had four attempts to take the victory in the last two minutes of regulation, as Franciscan had three. Tomcat goalkeeper Madison Liggett (Baltimore, Md./Catholic) made a crucial save with three seconds left to force the contest into overtime.
A Baron yellow card carried over and Hayden scored the man-up goal 40 seconds into the overtime, assisted by Jade Mazzoni (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem).
Ashlyn had ten goals on the day, three in the first quarter and four in the second to give Thiel the 10-8 lead at halftime. She has 10 ground balls, eight draw controls and an assist to help secure the victory.
Skylar Garlick (Fort Loudon, Pa./James Buchanan) had a pair of goals, along with an assist and five ground balls and Meg Gill (Columbia, S.C./Blythewood) tallied a goal herself. Gill had six draw controls and three ground balls.
Liggett faced 39 shots, made nine saves and picked up eight ground balls.
The Tomcats will host Grove City on Saturday, April 26th at 3 p.m. when they take on Wolverines for senior day.
