NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Thiel College Softball team split their opening day games with a 5-4 loss to Kenyon College and a 7-4 victory over Keystone College where Head Coach Paul Gray secured his first win at the helm of the program.
The Tomcats advanced to 1-1 on the year, as the Owls advanced to 8-2 and the Giants dropped to 0-4.
Game 1
In game one, the Tomcats went to extra innings with Kenyon but ultimately lost on a sacrifice bunt and a single to the short stop.
In the top of the 6th, the Tomcats scored a pair of runs to even the score at 3-3 after battling a scoreless first four innings.
Junior Kylie Heid (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) had three hits off five at bats, including one triple in the top of the fifth and an RBI in the sixth.
Kayley Risser (Reynoldsville, Pa./Dubois Central Catholic) had two hits up the middle in her first career at bats and scored once.
The tomcats had a total of eight hits on the day and pitcher Becca Landis (Kinsman, Ohio/Mathews) had five strikeouts in 8.1 IP.
Game 2
After a quick two runs by Keystone in the bottom of the second, Thiel bounced back as two errors by the Giants drove in runners Risser and Jensen Stehlik (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Nordonia).
Risser had three hits, including a double, RBI and a stolen base, while Stehlik had one hit and a diving catch in the 4th.
The Tomcats added three runs in the sixth off a wild pitch and a double from Dani Ficeti (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) to up the score 7-4.
Thiel had a total of 13 hits; Abby Rottman (Hilliards, Pa./Moniteau) adding three and Heid, Ficeti and Ava Gilmore (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex Area) with two.
Pitcher Alaina Fedder (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) tabbed her first career win on the mound with 72 pitches and left Keystone scoreless through the last three innings.
Looking Ahead
The Tomcats are back in action Monday, March 10 as they continue their series with a pair of games. Thiel will face off against Penn State Beaver at 11 a.m. and Minnesota Morris at 1 p.m. at North Myrtle Beach Park & Sports Complex field 2.
