Softball sweeps 2-0 over SUNY Canton and Covenant

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Thiel College Softball team had a 2-0 sweep on the day where they run ruled both SUNY Canton 8-0 and Covenant 13-4 in the fifth innings Wednesday afternoon in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. 

The Tomcats advance to 3-1 on the season, as SUNY Canton falls to 0-5 and Covenant falls to 9-13.  
 

Game 1  

Thiel defeated SUNY Covenant in 8-0 in the 5th inning after scoring four straight runs due to a wild pitch and two singles to the outfield.  

Multiple Tomcat's added hits on the day including Dani Ficeti (Greenville, Pa./Greenville), Abby Rottman (Hilliards, Pa./Moniteau), and Ava Gilmore (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex Area) with two and Kayley Risser (Reynoldsville, Pa./Dubois Central Catholic), Jensen Stehlik (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Nordonia), Kylie Heid (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley), Rylie Fordyce (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) and Leigha Kayser (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) all with one.  

Ficeti recorded a run and two RBIs after a single to right field and to the infield. 

In the first inning, Risser and Stehlik stole third and second where Risser scored after a throwing error was made on the play. Heid also had a stolen base in the top of the third.  

Pitcher Becca Landis (Kinsman, Ohio/Mathews) threw a near perfect game with only one hit and seven strikeouts. The 8-0 win is Landis's first win of the season.  
 

Game 2 

The Tomcats scored five straight runs in the top of fifth due to three singles to the outfield, a passed ball, and a throwing error to give them the 13-4 victory.  

Ficeti and Leigha Kayser (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) each had three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored, both adding a double to their days.  

Stehlik had three stolen bases in the second, third and fourth innings, and scored off a single from Ficeti.  

In the second inning, Mackenzie Herman (Greenville, Pa./Reynolds) and Ficeti scored off a throw and passed ball, while Kayser hit a double to center field to bring Alaina Fedder (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) home to give Thiel the 3-1 lead.  

On the mound, Herman secured her first win of the season with 5.0 IP and two strikeouts.  

Looking Ahead

The Tomcat's are back in action on Thursday, March 13th when they take on Penn State Harrisburg at 11 a.m. and Rochester Christian at 5 p.m. Both matches will take place at North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex Field 4.
