FT. PIERCE, Fla. (March 9) -- The Thiel College Baseball team dropped a wacky matchup with Lasell College 9-8 Sunday afternoon at Lawnwood Baseball Complex in non-conference action from Ft. Pierce, Fla.
The Tomcats drop to 1-3 while the Lasers rise to 3-1.
Lasell put a 4-spot on the board in the seventh to pull ahead 9-5. The Tomcats answered in the bottom of the frame as
Andrew McRoberts (Cortland, Ohio/Lakeview) brought home 2 on a double to make it 9-7. The Blue and Gold capitalized on an error to open the ninth as
Ethan Bintrim (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) cranked an RBI double to make it 9-8. Bintrim advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, but Thiel was unable to bring him home as the Lasers fended off Thiel's comeback effort.
McRoberts and Bintrim each had two RBIs and a run with the former going 2-for-4 and latter finishing 2-for-5.
Nate Lucas (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) got the start for Thiel and escaped a bases loaded, one out jam in the second with a pair of strikeouts to keep it 0-0. Lasell broke through with a run in the third and 3 in the fourth to lead 4-0.
Lucas took a no decision as he struck out seven in 4.1 innings and was tagged with 3 earned runs.
Thiel mustered one hit and two baserunners through the first five innings but were able to break through in the sixth as a
Colton Brightwell (Eighty Four, Pa./Bentworth) double followed by a pair of errors got Thiel within 4-2. A
Max Bihler (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy Berlin) walk precluded a
Calvin Cackowski (Wickliffe, Ohio/Wickliffe) 2-run double that knotted things at 4 later in the frame.
Brightwell had one hit and 2 runs while Cackowski was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. Bihler drew three walks and scored once.
Lasell retook the lead in the bottom of the frame, but a Bintrim RBI single tied things at 5 in the seventh.
In total, seven errors were committed as Thiel had four and Lasell had three.
Dillon Belknap (Lagrange, Ohio/Keystone) struck out two in 2.1 innings and took the loss to move to 0-1.
Baseball hits the diamond again tomorrow in Ft. Pierce, Fla with a 10 a.m. matchup versus Wheaton.
