GREENVILLE, Pa. (March 29) -- The Thiel College Women's Lacrosse team throttled Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) foe Bethany College 21-4 Saturday afternoon at the Rissell-Schreyer Dome.
The Tomcats improve to 7-1 overall and 2-1 in league play while the Bison drop to 1-9 on the year and 0-2 in PAC action.
The Blue and Gold jumped to a 4-0 lead 10:30 into the game as
Jade Mazzoni (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Salem) tallied a pair of goals and
Skylar Garlick (Fort Loudon, Pa./James Buchanan) and
Ashlyn Wightman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) each netted one. Bethany struck at the 3:02 mark to make it 4-1. The Tomcats rattled in two more goals in the quarter as
Ashlyn Wightman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) and
Hayden Wightman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) each logged one, making it 6-1 after 15 minutes. The Tomcats tallied 6-of-7 goals in the second to lead 12-2 at the intermission.
Ashlyn Wightman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) finished with game bests in goals (eight), ground balls (nine) and draw controls (11). She increases her season goal total to 66, a conference best, and her career total to 340 which is far and away the program record and second most among all active NCAA DIII players.
Mazzoni finished with four goals on four shot attempts while Garlick posted four goals and two assists for 6 points to go with three ground balls and draw controls each.
Hayden Wightman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) netted a pair of goals, dished out one helper and had three ground balls.
Fiona Shaffer (Fairmount City, Pa./Redbank Valley) logged the second goal of her career to continue the onslaught in the third, making it 13-2.
Meg Gill (Columbia, S.C./Blythewood) and Garlick added goals late in the period to push the lead to 15 at 18-3. Garlick and
Ashlyn Wightman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) accounted for Thiel's goals in the fourth to spell the 21-4 final.
Shaffer finished with a goal and three ground balls while Gill had two goals, one assist, four ground balls and four draw controls.
Madison Ligget improved to 7-1 on the year as she made 13 saves and improved her save percentage to a conference-best .615.
Thiel was 12-of-16 on clear attempts and held a near-2-to-1 edge in ground balls at 25-13. The Blue and Gold won 19-of-29 draw controls and were 6-of-7 on free-position attempts.
Women's Lacrosse returns to action Tuesday for a 5 p.m. non-conference tilt at Mt. Aloysius.
