Joey King (Cooperstown, Pa./Maplewood) was named a National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-American Tuesday.
On the mat, recipients must either place in the top eight in the regional tournament or wrestle at least 15 matches and have a win percentage greater than 66 percent. In the classroom, recipients must either have an average GPA of 3.2 over the last two semesters/quarters/last 3 trimesters or have a cumulative GPA of 3.2.
King is a biology major excelling in the classroom in his first year in Greenville. He joins heavyweight teammate
Seth Phillips (Hubbard, Ohio/Western Reserve) as recipients of the prestigious award as Phillips was honored last season.
King was crowned the 197-pound Presidents' Athletic Conference Champion after breezing through the field with three first-period pins. His first-place finish was the programs 16th at 197 pounds in team history and the first since current assistant coach Gage Gladysz did so in 2019. He placed seventh at the Region 4 Championships.
King finished the season with a 19-4 mark as he collected 11 wins via pin, five by technical fall, two by major decision and one by decision.
