Softball sweeps Franciscan 2-0 in home opener; Landis with 18 total strikeouts

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Thiel College Softball team swept the Franciscan Barons in their Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader 8-0 and 6-3 Tuesday night at the Softball Field at Tomcat Park.  

Thiel advances 8-4 in the regular season and 2-2 in conference play, as Franciscan falls to 3-9 and 0-4 in the PAC.  

Game 1 

At the bottom of the fifth inning, Jensen Stehlik (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Nordonia) hit an in the park home run to bring her and Kayley Risser (Reynoldsville, Pa./Dubois Central Catholic) home to make the score 6-0. Dani Ficeti (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) hit a single to centerfield to bring Kylie Heid (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) home and Alaina Fedder (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) had a sacrifice fly to end the game 8-0.  

Risser had two doubles and a bomb to centerfield for a triple, while Stehlik had two hits and 3 RBIs.  

Mackenzie Herman (Greenville, Pa./Reynolds) slammed a one run homerun to right field to make the score 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning.  

Ficeti and Stehlik picked up an RBI from a deep double to center field and a perfect bunt down the first-base line.  

Makenna Oswalt (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) and Rylie Fordyce (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area) each had a hit themselves, along with RBIs.  

Pitcher Becca Landis (Kinsman, Ohio/Mathews) pitched all five innings and had a career-high 11 strikeouts.  

Game 2  

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Heid tripled to right field to bring Stehlik and Risser home followed by Ficeti with a single up the middle to bring Heid home and secure the winning runs.  

Ficeti had two hits on the day, including a double to the outfield and a sacrifice fly to have an RBI in the third to make the score 3-0. Heid also had two hits in the day, along with RBIs and two runs scored.  

Herman rocked a ball to deep center field for an RBI triple to bring Ficeti home in the first.  

Risser, Stehlik, and Abby Rottman (Hilliards, Pa./Moniteau) each had a hit themselves.  

Landis and Herman split time on the mound, Landis with 5.0 IP and seven strikeouts, and Herman with 2.0 IP and three strikeouts.  

Looking Ahead

The Tomcats are back in action when they host Carlow in a non-conference doubleheader at the Softball Field at Tomcat Park. The two-game series is set to start at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
