NORTH MYRTLE BEACH S.C. -- The Thiel College Softball team had another 2-0 sweep to give them five straight wins on the season. They defeated Penn State Harrisburg 4-3 and Rochester Christian 7-6 in two very close games. Â
Thiel advances to 5-1 on the season, while Penn State Harrisburg falls to 3-2, and Rochester Christian drops to 0-4. Â
Game 1Â
In the bottom of the 5th inning, the Lions added three runs due to errors in the infield to make the score 4-3. Jensen Stehlik (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Nordonia) made her fourth diving catch on the day to keep the base runners from advancing and help secure the victory. Â
Kylie Heid (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) had two triples, one in the first and the fifth, bringing in Kayler Risser for the first score of the game. Mackenzie Herman (Greenville, Pa./Reynolds) then singled up the middle to bring Heid home and give Thiel the 2-0 in the top of the first. Â
Herman had two hits and an RBI, Risser, Ava Gilmore (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex Area) and Alaina Fedder (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) each added their own.Â
In the second, Risser hit a single up the middle to bring Fedder home and make the score 3-0. Â
Senior Becca Landis (Kinsman, Ohio/Mathews) pitched all seven inning and had 5 strikeouts.Â
Game 2 Â
Tied 1-1 in the 5th inning, Makenna Oswalt (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) hit a single to right field, followed by an in the park home run by Heid to bring both of the Tomcats home. Â
Haylie Kidd (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) then doubled to left field and Brianna Rottman (Hilliards, Pa./Moniteau) singled off a bunt. Both runners were brought home by Herman who hit a double centerfield and Leigha Kayser (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) who singled to right field. Herman came home and upped the score to 6-2. Â
Rottman and Oswalt both had three hits on the day, including a triple from Oswalt. Â
An error by the first baseman gave Alayzha McCray (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) her first on base of the season and Rottman was brought home to lead 7-2. Â
Rochester Christian battled back in the bottom of the seventh with five hits to make the score 7-6 but Alaina Fedder (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) made the final play of the day with a ground out throw to first to secure the win.Â
Fedder pitched for all seven innings and threw two strikeouts. Â
Looking Ahead
The Tomcats are back in action on Friday, March 14th for their final two games on the week. Thiel will take on FDU-Florham at 9 a.m. and Penn State DuBois at 11 a.m. at the North Myrtle Beach Park & Sports Complex on fields 6 and 3. Â
