FT. PIERCE, Fla. (March 13) -- The Thiel College Baseball team earned a split with Marywood University Thursday afternoon at Lawnwood Baseball Complex in non-conference play from Ft. Pierce, Fla.
The Tomcats (2-5) took game two 12-6 while the Pacers (4-3) took game one 9-7.
Game 2 -- Thiel 12, Marywood 6
Thiel got the scoring started in the second as
Max Bihler (Delaware, Ohio/Olentangy Berlin) scampered home on a wild pitch to make it 1-0.
Colton Brightwell (Eighty Four, Pa./Bentworth) added a 2-run triple later in the inning to push the lead to 3-0. An
Ethan Bintrim (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) RBI ground out made it 4-0 after two.
Brightwell finished 3-for-4 with 3 runs, two RBIs and a walk. Bihler had a pair of walks and scored 3 runs as Bintrim finished with one RBI.
Marywood added 2 in the third to cut the deficit in half before a
Nathen Prunty (Elyria, Ohio/Keystone) run-scoring double made it 5-2 in the fourth. Leading 7-3 in the sixth,
Chase Morrison (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) lined a 2-run double down the left-field line to make it 9-3.
Prunty was 1-for-5 with a RBI while Morrison was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run.
Nick Jacobs (New Castle, Pa./Union) and
Calvin Cackowski (Wickliffe, Ohio/Wickliffe) each had run-scoring singles in the seventh to push Thiel's lead to 12-3. The Pacers added 3 in the seventh as
Archie Teconchuk (Warren, Pa./Warren) notched the final three outs.
Jacobs was 3-for-4 with 2 runs, an RBI and a walk. Cackowski finished 2-for-3 with 2 runs, one RBI and one walk in game two.
Nate Lucas (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) got his first win of the year as he logged five innings of 3-run ball and struck out three. Teconchuk struck out one in the final frame.
Game 1 -- Thiel 7, Marywood 9
Trailing 9-4 in the seventh and down to their final out, the Tomcats put a two-out rally together as a Bintrim single moved
Fletcher Hindman (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) to third. Prunty clubbed a 2-run double to right center then Jacobs followed with a RBI triple to make it 9-7 and bring the tying run to the plate. The Pacers ultimately got out of the jam to spell the 9-7 final.
Prunty was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, a run and a walk in game one. Jacobs finished 1-for-3 with a RBI and a walk. Bintrim had a hit and a run while Hindman scored twice.
The Blue and Gold were the benefactors of a sloppy battery in the second inning as they plated 2 runs on wild pitches and one on a passed ball to go ahead 4-3. Marywood tallied runs in each of the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings to lead by 5.
Alec Katon (Ashtabula, Ohio/Edgewood) made the start and took the loss, falling to 1-2. He went 4.1 innings, struck out four and was charged with 3 earned runs.
Josh Daum (Tionesta, Pa./North Clarion) went two innings with a strikeout while
Dennis Fedele (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) went 0.2 innings with a K.
