GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College men's soccer team defeated the Pitt-Greensburg Bobcats, 2-1, Saturday night under the lights at Alumni Stadium.
With the win, the Tomcats improve to 2-0. It is the first time the Tomcats have won their opening two matches since 2018.
The first half was tightly contested, with neither team able to produce any threatening chances.
However, things started to heat up in the second half.
Just four minutes into the second half, the Bobcats were awarded a penalty kick, that they would then convert.
Not even a minute later, the Tomcats were able to equalize through graduate student
AJ Trobek (Hubbard, Ohio/Hubbard), who received the ball from
Andy Mangold (Bradford Pa./Bradford Area), and slotted it home.
Both teams were able to create chances, but could not convert, until
Hunter Blatt (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) received a cross from freshman
Ethan Bihler (Bossier City, La./Benton), who slotted it past the keeper in the 88
th minute to give the Tomcats the late lead.
A crucial save from goalkeeper
Bryce Stefanowicz (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) helped keep the Tomcats in the lead for good.
Thiel was led by Trobek and Blatt who each recorded a goal. Mangold and Bihler each recorded an assist.
Mitchell Strauss (Bradford Pa./Bradford Area) recorded a game-high five shots.
Pitt-Greensburg was led by Matt Armenio who recorded the Bobcats' lone goal. Armenio recorded four shots, while Arlo McIntyre also recorded four shots.
Stefanowicz started in goal for the Tomcats, making four saves.
Brett Barnes started in net for the Bobcats, making three saves.
The Tomcats are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Penn State Beaver. The non-conference game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
