Tomcats sweep Wolverines

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College softball team swept the Grove City Wolverines Tuesday in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader at Tomcat Park. Thiel won 7-6 in Game 1 and 3-2 in Game 2.
 
Game 1: Thiel 7, Grove City 6
 
Thiel led 4-0 after two innings and held on for a 7-6 win.
 
Riley Ladd (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) gave the Tomcats the lead in the first inning on an RBI-single down the right field line. In the second frame, Makenna Oswalt (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) made it 2-0 when she singled down the right field line. Abby Rottman (Hilliards, Pa./Moniteau) followed with a 2-RBI single to right field to increase Thiel's lead to 4-0.
 
Grove City took the lead (6-4) after scoring three runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings. Thiel responded with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to preserve the win. Jensen Stehlik (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Nordonia) drove in the first run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly. Rottman went on to deliver the game-tying and game-winning runs on a 2-RBI single down the right field line.
 
Rottman went 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Oswalt went 2-for-3 with a double while Kayla Roddy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) also went 2-for-3. Marsha Foreman (Bonita Springs, Fla./Bonita Springs) doubled.
 
Grace Thompson (Beaver, Pa./Beaver Area) earned the win. She threw 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Starting pitcher Roddy struck out three batters in 5 1/3 innings.
 
Game 2: Thiel 3, Grove City 2
 
The Tomcats took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Rottman drove in the first run on a sacrifice bunt. Foreman followed with an RBI-double to left field.
 
Rottman made it 3-0 in the third on an RBI-double to right center field.
 
The Wolverines scored two runs in the seventh inning, but the Tomcats eked out the 3-2 win to improve to 5-3 in conference play.
 
Kylie Heid (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Rottman doubled and tallied two RBIs. Foreman and Mackenzie Herman (Greenville, Pa./Reynolds) both doubled.
 
Becca Landis (Kinsman, Ohio/Mathews) earned the win. She allowed two runs on nine hits with three strikeouts.
 
Thiel is scheduled to face the Allegheny Gators on the road Thursday. The first game of the PAC doubleheader is set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
