Tomcats drop doubleheader against Titans

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team dropped a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games to the Westminster Titans at Tomcat Park Sunday afternoon.

Westminster won game one 11-5, before winning game two 9-4 to earn the sweep.

Game 1
The Titans got on the board first in the second inning after a failed pickoff attempt from Alec Katon (Ashtabula, Ohio/Edgewood) gave the Titans the lead. Then, Josh Reed singled to drive in another.

However, the Tomcats response was swift, scoring two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. First, Nathen Prunty (Elyria, Ohio/Keystone) hit his first homerun of the season, before Kolten Kruszewski (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) singled to right, driving in Nick Jacobs (New Castle, Pa./Union).

Westminster would add another run in the third, before a Jacobs single tied up the game in the bottom half of the inning.

A six-run seventh inning blew the game open for the Titans, taking a 9-3 lead. The Titans would add two runs in the ninth, before the Tomcats scored two in the bottom half of the ninth to finish out the scoring.

Thiel was led by Prunty who went 2-for-4 with a homerun. Jacobs went 2-for-5 with an RBI, while Ethan Bintrim (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) went 3-for-4. Mike Sittig (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) went 1-for-4, extending his hitting streak to 14 games.

Westminster was led by Josh Reed who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Matthew Randza, Jake Dockum and Chase Tomko all recorded two RBIs.

Alec Katon (Ashtabula, Ohio/Edgewood) got the start on the mound for the Tomcats, going 4 2/3 innings, striking out five. Brock Matthews (West Sunbury, Pa./Moniteau), Josh Ickes (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) and Archie Teconchuk (Warren, Pa./Warren) all pitched in relief.
Kolton Banfi started for Westminster, going eight innings, striking out four. Tre Leighty pitched an inning in relief.

Game 2
Westminster took an early lead in the first inning, before Thiel tied it up in the second inning. The Titans quickly regained the lead, scoring three in the fourth inning, and that would be enough to hold the lead.

Thiel was led by Kolten Kruszewski (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Colton Brightwell (Eighty Four, Pa./Bentworth) went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Nathen Prunty (Elyria, Ohio/Keystone) went 2-for-5 with an RBI.

Westminster was led by Dockum who went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Donald Shimko went 2-for-5 with an RBI.

Brady Rzodkiewicz (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) started on the mound for the Tomcats, going 5 2/3 innings. Josh Ickes (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) and Mason Suss (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) pitched in relief.

Jake Vitale went seven innings for Westminster, striking out seven. Logan Exler pitched the final two innings, striking out one.

The Tomcats will return to Tomcat Park on Monday for a PAC doubleheader against Geneva. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12 p.m.
