Tomcats fall to Purple Raiders

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team dropped a non-conference game to the Mount Union Purple Raiders, 13-2, Sunday afternoon at Tomcat Park.

Mount Union got on the board in the second inning, before the Purple Raiders added four more in the third, which would be enough for the win.

Mount Union added six runs in the sixth and two in the eighth innings.

Thiel was led by Yoshinori Hashimoto (Tokyo, Japan/Arakawa) who went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Nick Jacobs (New Castle, Pa./Union) went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Chase Morrison (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) and Joey Schimizzi (Willowick, Ohio/Willoughby South) each recorded a hit. Cole Sherwin (Karns City, Pa./Karns City) scored a run on a wild pitch in the eighth inning.

Mount Union was led by Jaired Lehman who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Zack Mazza also drove in three runs for the Purple Raiders.

Nate Lucas (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) got the start for Thiel in a bullpen day, going two innings, allowing just one run. Garrison Martin (Beloit, Ohio/West Branch), Josh Ickes (Greenville, Pa./Greenville), Josh Daum (Tionesta, Pa./North Clarion), Ethan Bintrim (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) and Dillon Belknap (Lagrange, Ohio/Keystone) all pitched in relief for the Tomcats.

Chase Mayer got the start for Mount Union, going 4 2/3 innings, striking out seven. Ty Dennison fanned five and earned the win. Luke Eddy threw the final frame.

The Tomcats will return to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Tuesday when they host the Allegheny Gators at Tomcat Park. The PAC doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
