Tomcats split twinbill with Yellow Jackets

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team split a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games with the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets Tuesday afternoon at Tomcat Park.

Thiel won game one 10-9, before Waynesburg took game two 18-1.

Game 1
Thiel opened the scoring in the second inning after JT Gerle Jr. (Ambridge, Pa./Ambridge) doubled to left center field that drove in a run. Mike Sittig (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) followed that up with a single that scored another run, before Seth Johnson (Magnolia, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) doubled to right field that scored a third.

Waynesburg got one back in the third, before Thiel regained their three-run lead in the bottom half of the inning.

The Tomcats added four runs in the fifth, before Waynesburg scored seven runs in the seventh inning to tie the game up 8-8.

A single down the right field line gave Waynesburg a 9-8 lead in the eighth, before Seth Johnson (Magnolia, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) singled down the right field line that score two to make the score 10-9.

Thiel was led by Johnson who went 4-for-6 with three RBIs. Gerle Jr. went 1-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs, while Cole Sherwin (Karns City, Pa./Karns City) went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored. Ethan Bintrim (New Castle, Pa./Shenango), Aidan Ochs (Rostraver Township, Pa./Belle Veron) and Sittig all recorded an RBI.

Waynesburg was led by Trent Giraffa who went 1-for-4 with three RBIs. Seth Burgdolt went 1-for-5 with two RBIs, while Mike Bell went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and two walks.

Alec Katon (Ashtabula, Ohio/Edgewood) started for the Tomcats, going six innings, giving up four runs on three hits and fanning six batters. Josh Daum (Tionesta, Pa./North Clarion) went two innings, allowing four hits and five runs, only one of which was earned. Brady Rzodkiewicz (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) earned his second save of the season, throwing one inning of relief work.

Ethan Erhard started for Waynesburg, going 2 1/3 innings giving up six hits and four runs. Mike Bell earned the loss, going 2/3 of an inning, giving up one run on one hit.

Game 2
Waynesburg scored six runs in the first inning that gave them the lead for good.

Thiel was led by Sherwin who went 1-for-2 with a walk. Chase Morrison (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley), Joey Schimizzi (Willowick, Ohio/Willoughby South) and Giovanni Elinsky (Warren, Pa./Warren) all recorded a hit.

Waynesburg was led by Aidan Williams who went 3-for-3 with 5 RBIs. Trent Giraffa went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Lane Ours went 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

Brock Matthews (West Sunbury, Pa./Moniteau) started for Thiel, going one inning, giving up seven runs on six hits. Josh Ickes (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) struck out two and walked two. Garrison Martin (Beloit, Ohio/West Branch), Dennis Fedele (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory), Brett Channell (Warren, Ohio/Champion), Tyler Little (Adamstown, Md./Tuscarora) and Kolton Adkins (Perrysburg, Ohio/Lake) all threw in relief.

Ryan Opfer went all seven innings, giving up just one run on six hits. He fanned four and also walked four in the win.

The Tomcats host the Penn State Altoona Lions on Thursday for a doubleheader. The non-conference twinbill is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
