GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team split a pair of non-conference games against the Penn State Altoona Lions Thursday afternoon.
Penn State Altoona won game one 19-3, before the Tomcats bounced back to take game two 4-1.
Game 1
Penn State Altoona scored seven runs in the first inning, which would be enough for the win.
Thiel was led by
Joseph Fell (Warren, Ohio/Champion) and
Devin Gruver (Hermitage, Pa./West Middlesex) who each recorded an RBI.
Ethan Bintrim (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) went 2-for-3, while
Andrew McRoberts (Cortland, Ohio/Lakeview) went 1-for-1.
Penn State Altoona was led by Jonathan Rauch who went 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Tyreke Green went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Nate Lucas (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) started, striking out one.
Josh Daum (Tionesta, Pa./North Clarion),
Josh Ickes (Greenville, Pa./Greenville),
Archie Teconchuk (Warren, Pa./Warren) and
Dillon Belknap (Lagrange, Ohio/Keystone) all pitched in relief.
Carter Piercey started for the Lions, going three innings and striking out one. Michael Labisi got the win, going four innings with four strikeouts and two runs.
Game 2
The Tomcats did a majority of their damage in the bottom of the first inning, scoring two runs. First,
Chase Morrison (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) singled to right center field, before
JT Gerle Jr. (Ambridge, Pa./Ambridge) reached on a fielding error, scoring
Nathen Prunty (Elyria, Ohio/Keystone).
Thiel added a third run in the second inning when
Cole Sherwin (Karns City, Pa./Karns City) hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored
Aidan Ochs (Rostraver Township, Pa./Belle Veron).
Penn State Altoona scored their only run in the fifth inning off a single to left field.
Thiel rounded out the scoring when
Colton Brightwell (Eighty Four, Pa./Bentworth) hit a sacrifice fly to right center field that scored McRoberts.
The Tomcats had a combined no-hitter into the fifth inning, before the Lions got their only hit of the game.
Thiel was led by Morrison who went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Brightwell and Sherwin both also recorded an RBI. McRoberts went 1-for-2 with a walk, while
Aidan Ochs (Rostraver Township, Pa./Belle Veron) went 1-for-3.
Kolten Kruszewski (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) went 1-for-3.
Jake Hillard recorded the Lions only hit, driving in a run as well. Jimmy Mentos walked, while Grayson McClain also walked.
Brady Rzodkiewicz (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) recorded the win, going two innings striking out one.
Nick Ondo (Sharon, Pa./Kennedy Catholic) recorded three strikeouts and didn't give up a hit in two innings.
Mason Suss (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) and
Ethan Bintrim (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) pitched in relief, with Bintrim earning his third save of the year.
Brycen Flinton went five innings, giving up seven hits and three runs. Alex Hlivia went one innings, giving up two hits and a run.
The Tomcats return to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play on Saturday when they host the Grove City Wolverines on senior day. The conference doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m.
