GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College softball team split a pair of non-conference games Thursday against the La Roche Redhawks at Tomcat Park. Thiel won 7-2 in the first game before falling 10-3 in the second contest.
Game 1: Thiel 7, La Roche 2
The Tomcats took control with a 5-run sixth inning, all of which were scored after loading the bases with no outs.
Kylie Heid (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) drove in what would count as the game-winning run on a single to left field.
Kayla Roddy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) followed with an RBI-single to center field to make it 4-2.
Mackenzie Herman (Greenville, Pa./Reynolds) added to the lead with a sacrifice fly to left field while
Mila Brdar (White Oak, Pa./McKeesport) made it 6-2 when she was hit by a pitch.
Becca Landis (Kinsman, Ohio/Mathews) drove in the final run in the sixth on a single to center field.
Heid went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.
Riley Ladd (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) and
Abby Rottman (Hilliards, Pa./Moniteau) both went 2-for-3. Ladd had one RBI while one of Rottman's hits was a triple.
Roddy earned the win, her fifth of the season. She allowed two runs on nine hits and struck out two batters.
Game 2: La Roche 10, Thiel 3
Trailing 5-0, the Tomcats made it a game with three runs in the fifth inning. Herman had the key hit in the inning, a 2-RBI double to left field. Rottman also drove in a run on a single to center field.
La Roche went on to score five more runs over the final two innings to earn the win in the second game.
Rottman went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Herman doubled and drove in two runs.
Jensen Stehlik (Sagamore Hills, Ohio/Nordonia) and
Makenna Oswalt (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) both tripled.
Thiel will host the W&J Presidents Friday. The first game of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
