GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team defeated the Hiram Terriers, 5-3, in a non-conference game Monday afternoon at Tomcat Park.
Thiel took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, with
Nathen Prunty (Elyria, Ohio/Keystone) walking with the bases-loaded, followed by
Ethan Bintrim (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) grounding into a double play, which scored a run. Then,
Nick Jacobs (New Castle, Pa./Union) singled to center field to drive in the third run of the inning.
Hiram scored in the fourth inning to cut the Thiel lead to 3-1, before the Terriers tied the game up in the top half of the eighth inning 3-3.
The Tomcats quickly responded with a Jacobs double to left-center, a
Chase Morrison (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) single, and a
Kolten Kruszewski (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) reaching on a fielder's choice, gave the Tomcats a 5-3 advantage heading into the ninth inning.
Thiel was led by
Nick Jacobs (New Castle, Pa./Union) who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
Mike Sittig (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) continued his great start to the season, extending his hitting streak to 11 games, going 2-for-4 with a walk, while
Chase Morrison (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) went 2-for-4, and
Nathen Prunty (Elyria, Ohio/Keystone) going 1-for-3 with an RBI.
On the mound for the Tomcats, freshman
Brady Rzodkiewicz (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) went seven innings, giving up five hits and just one run, before
Josh Ickes (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) and
Garrison Martin (Beloit, Ohio/West Branch) pitched in relief. Rzodkiewicz struck out three, while Martin earned the win, going 1 2/3 innings with two strikeouts.
Hiram was led by Tyler Fernandez who went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk, while Hal Walker Jr. went 1-for-5 with an RBI.
Jacob Koces started for Hiram, going six innings with two strikeouts. Sam Boyle, Matthew Kardos and Cody Horvath all pitched in relief.
The Tomcats are slated to return to action on Wednesday, March 27 when they host the La Roche Redhawks. The non-conference game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
