Tomcats top Redhawks for fourth straight win

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team defeated the La Roche Redhawks, 5-3, in a non-conference game at Tomcat Park Wednesday afternoon.

Thiel jumped on La Roche early, going up 4-0 in the second inning. Thiel added another run in the fourth inning to finish out their scoring.

La Roche cut their deficit to 5-1 in the fifth inning when Cameron Mauk homered to right-center field.

The Redhawks added runs in the eighth and ninth innings to trim the Tomcat lead to 5-3, but Ethan Bintrim (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) would slam the door on La Roche to earn the save.

Thiel was led by Kolten Kruszewski (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) who went 2-for-3. Aidan Ochs (Rostraver Township, Pa./Belle Veron) and Ethan Bintrim (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) both went 2-for-4 with RBIs, and Seth Johnson (Magnolia, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) went 2-for-5.

Alec Katon (Ashtabula, Ohio/Edgewood) started the game for the Tomcats, retiring all six batters he faced. He also earned the win. Brock Matthews (West Sunbury, Pa./Moniteau) threw two scoreless innings, while Josh Ickes (Greenville, Pa./Greenville), Josh Daum (Tionesta, Pa./North Clarion) and Ethan Bintrim (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) all pitched in relief.

La Roche was led by Mauk who went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Christian Melendez went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Caden Maffitt started the game, going two innings, giving up four runs and striking out two. Jared Hough went six innings, striking out four.

The Tomcats return to Presidents' Athletic Conference play on Saturday when they travel to Bethany for a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
