WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Thiel College softball team split a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader Saturday on the road against the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets. Thiel won 4-3 in Game 1 while Waynesburg won 2-1 in Game 2.
Game 1: Thiel 4, Waynesburg 3
Thiel plated four runs in the fourth inning and held on to win, 4-3.
Riley Ladd (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) drove in two runs in the fourth on a double to center field.
Kylie Heid (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) scored Ladd on another double to center field while
Alaina Fedder (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) knocked in the fourth run on a single to center field.
The Yellow Jackets scored two runs in the sixth to cut the lead down to 4-3. In the seventh, Waynesburg loaded the bases with one out, but Thiel relief pitcher
Becca Landis (Kinsman, Ohio/Mathews) got out of the jam with a flyout and a strikeout to earn her first save of the season.
Haylie Kidd (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) and Ladd both went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Ladd also had two RBIs on a double in the fourth inning. Heid went 1-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored. Fedder also went 1-for-4 with one RBI.
Kayla Roddy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) earned the win. She allowed three runs, one of which was earned, in 6 1/3 innings. She struck out four and allowed one walk.
Game 2: Waynesburg 2, Thiel 1
Thiel took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice bunt by Roddy that was aided by a Waynesburg throwing error.
The Yellow Jackets evened the score (1-1) in the fourth inning on an error.
With the score still tied (1-1), Emma Bliss led off the bottom of the seventh with a double. Two batters later, Breanna Rice singled to give the Yellow Jackets the walk-off 2-1 win.
Heid went 2-for-3 and scored a run.
Landis took the loss. She allowed two runs, one of which was earned, on six hits. Landis struck out 10 batters and refused to allow a walk.
The Tomcats will face the Mount Union Purple Raiders on the road Monday. The first game of the non-conference doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
