Thiel opens PAC play with two wins over Chatham

Sittig extends hitting streak to ten games

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team won a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games against the Chatham Cougars, 4-3 and 5-4, Saturday afternoon.

Senior Mike Sittig (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) extended his hitting streak to ten games dating back to last season.

Game 1
The Tomcats took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning, before extending the lead to 2-0 in the fifth. Chatham pulled within one run in the sixth, before a two-run ninth inning gave the Tomcats a 4-1 lead after Mike Sittig (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) singled through the left-side, driving in Chase Morrison (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) and Nick Jacobs (New Castle, Pa./Union).

Chatham also scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but it was not enough.

For Thiel, Sittig went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Morrison and Kolten Kruszewski (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) both went 3-for-4, with Kruszewski driving in a run. Colton Brightwell (Eighty Four, Pa./Bentworth) and Nathen Prunty (Elyria, Ohio/Keystone) each recorded a hit.

Alec Katon (Ashtabula, Ohio/Edgewood) got his first win of the season, going six innings, striking out six and walking two. Garrison Martin (Beloit, Ohio/West Branch) pitched two innings in relief, giving up two runs, while Brady Rzodkiewicz (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) earned his first save of the season.

For Chatham, Peter Tadic and Angelo DeLeonardis both went 3-for-4, with DeLeonardis driving in a run.

Carter Beneigh went seven innings, striking out three and walking one. Dawson Morrow went two innings, giving up two runs and walking one.

Game 2
Chatham took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, before Thiel immediately responded with a run in the top of the second. Chatham then immediately took a 3-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning, before scoring their final run of the game in the third inning to go up 4-1.

Thiel scored one run in the fifth and seventh inning to cut the lead to 4-3. In the ninth inning, Ethan Bintrim (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) singled to left field, bringing in Joseph Fell (Warren, Ohio/Champion), who pinch-ran for Nathen Prunty (Elyria, Ohio/Keystone), before Chase Morrison (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) singled to right field, scoring Bintrim.

Josh Ickes (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) struck out a batter and got two fly balls to give the Tomcats the win.

The Tomcats were led by Mike Sittig (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) and Ethan Bintrim (New Castle, Pa./Shenango), who both went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Seth Johnson (Magnolia, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) also went 2-for-5, while Chase Morrison (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Nate Lucas (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) got the start, going 2 2/3 innings, striking out two batters. Brock Matthews (West Sunbury, Pa./Moniteau) pitched 4 1/3 innings in relief, striking out four and walking two, before Josh Ickes (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) earned his first win of the season, pitching two scoreless innings, striking out one.

Chatham was led by DeLeonardis who went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Devin Fluhmann went 1-for-2 with an RBI as well.

Nick Marin went 5 2/3 innings, striking out five and walking two. Gianni Cantini went two innings, walking two, while Tyler Cote went 1 1/3 innings, giving up two runs.

The Tomcats are back in action on Monday when they host the Hiram Terriers. The non-confernce game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
