GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College men's volleyball team defeated the Penn State Behrend Lions in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) match, 3-1, Wednesday night at Maenpa Court at Beeghly Gymnasium.
The Lions won the first set 25-18, before the Tomcats won the next three sets by scores of 26-24, 25-22, 25-19.
This is the first time the Tomcats have beaten the Lions since 2019 when they went on to win the AMCC Tournament Championship.
Penn State Behrend led the entire first set, before a second set that featured five ties and two lead changes. The third set featured two ties, and the final fourth set saw the score knotted three separate times.
Thiel was led by
JC Govannucci (North Huntington, Pa./Norwin) and
James Cromwell-Young (Virginia Beach, Va./Green Run) who each recorded 10 kills. Cromwell-Young added two blocks and four digs, while Govannucci added eight digs.
David Gonzalez (El Paso, Texas/Eastwood) recorded five kills, three blocks and 12 digs, while
Kaleb Proudfoot (Butler, Pa./Butler) recorded nine kills and four blocks.
Cameron Long (Rock Hill, S.C./Legion Collegiate Academy) recorded 11 digs, and
Ben Lowell (Portland, Ore./Sunset) recorded 31 assists.
Penn State Behrend was led by Alex Jackson who recorded 12 kills, seven digs and 38 assists. Owen Wienczkowski recorded 13 kills and four blocks, while Kyle Hoffman recorded 12 kills and eight digs. Logan Hering and Luke Mumpower each recorded 15 digs.
The Tomcats return to action on Saturday when they host the Penn State Altoona Lions and Adrian Bulldogs for a tri-match. The Tomcats will play Penn State Altoona in an AMCC match at 1 p.m., before closing out the tri-match against Adrian in a non-conference match at 5 p.m.
