Men’s soccer falls to Allegheny in eight-goal thriller

MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College men's soccer team dropped a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) match to the Allegheny Gators, 5-3, on the road Saturday afternoon.

Allegheny had a 1-0 lead at halftime, before a combined seven-goal second half finished the scoring.

Allegheny took the lead in the 31st minute behind a goal from Brady Napoleon.

Napoleon then doubled the hosts lead from the penalty spot in the 51st minute.

Three minutes later, Mitchell Strauss (Bradford Pa./Bradford Area) grabbed his fourth goal of the season to cut the deficit in half. Ten minutes later, Carson Maurer (Poland, Ohio/Poland) scored his second goal of the season, drawing the game level at 2-2.

However, 12 seconds later, Allegheny regained the lead for good.

The Gators added their fourth goal of the day in the 75th minute, before Ethan Bihler (Bossier City, La./Benton) scored his second goal of the season to cut into the Allegheny lead.

Napoleon added his third goal of the day, second from the penalty spot, in the 88th minute to secure the Allegheny win.

Thiel was led by Strauss who recorded one goal on four shots. Maurer recorded one goal, while Bihler also recorded one goal. Grant Becker (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted) recorded one assist. Kyle Benson (Roaming Shores, Ohio/Grand Valley) also recorded his first collegiate assist. Neko Hatton (Bryans Road, Md./Henry E. Lackey) recorded four shots.

Napoleon led the way for Allegheny, recording three goals and one assist. Will Gruca recorded five shots.

In goal for Thiel, Bryce Stefanowicz (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) recorded eight saves.

For Allegheny, Cadan Bennett recorded two saves.

The Tomcats will close out the 2024 season at home on Wednesday when they host the Bethany Bison at Alumni Stadium. Prior to the game, the Tomcats will honor the senior members of the team. The PAC finale is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
