Jenness tallies 6th 20-plus kill effort in women's volleyball's loss at St. Vincent

LATROBE, Pa. (Oct. 23) -- The Thiel College women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 road Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) matchup Wednesday evening at the Robert S. Carey Center to St. Vincent College.

The loss moved the Tomcats to 15-6 overall and 3-3 in PAC play. The Bearcats improved to 10-10 on the year and 4-1 in conference play.

The home side won through a score line of 25-14, 17-25, 25-21 and 25-20.

The Bearcats held a slim 7-6 lead in the opening set before tallying 6 straight points and 9 of 10 points to grow the lead to 16-7. Both sides played fairly evenly to end the set as the visitors were outscored 9-7 to end the opening frame.

The Tomcats started the second set strong, holding leads of 7-3 and 10-5. After a Bearcats kill cut the deficit to 15-10, the Tomcats went on a 4-0 run, capped off by a Daisy Jenness (Pendleton, Ore./Pendleton) service ace, to extend the lead to 9. St. Vincent tallied 5 of the next 6 points to stay competitive in the frame but a pair of kills each from Jenness and Arin DeLattre (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) gave the Tomcats the set to pull the match even at one apiece.

Thiel rode the second-set-win momentum to a 7-5 lead in the third set, but the Bearcats notched 9 of the next 11 points to hold a 14-9 edge. Back-to-back Erica Gregory (Clinton Township, Mich./Fraser) kills cut the deficit to 3 (22-19) but St. Vincent sided out the rest of the set to go on top 2-1.

Set four was neck and neck as a Jenness kill cut the Bearcats lead to 12-10, but a 6-0 SVC run grew the lead to 18-10. The Tomcats staved off 4 match points, 3 of which came on Jenness kills, but ultimately dropped the set and the match.

Jenness tallied a match-high 20 kills on 47 attempts to hit a team-best .298. On the year, Jenness leads the Tomcats with six 20-plus kill performances and 16 double-digit kill matches. Over her last 13 appearances, Jenness has notched at least 13 kills in 12 of those matches. The junior standout leads the PAC in total kills (335) and kills per set (4.14).

Gregory finished with nine kills and 13 digs in the loss. Lyndzee Amory (Edinboro, Pa./Saegertown) had seven kills while DeLattre added five to go with seven digs and a team-best two solo blocks.

Carlie Reynolds (Grove City, Pa./Grove City Area) had a team-leading 37 assists to go with 14 digs for her 15th double-double of the season. Danielle Aulet (Lawrence, Kansas/Mineral Ridge) dug a game-high 23 balls.

The Tomcats return to action Saturday at 11 a.m. when they host Bethany for senior day.
