GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College football team defeated the Allegheny Gators, 21-7, in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at Alumni Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The win is Thiel's first over Allegheny on the gridiron since a 44-21 win in 2016.
Thiel won the toss, and deferred to the second half.
Allegheny started the opening drive of the game at their own 31 yard-line.
The Gators picked up four first downs on the opening drive, setting up a first and ten at the Thiel 24 yard-line. On the ensuing play, Allegheny's Dominic Berarducci ran 11 yards, before
Justin Logan (North Chesterfield, Va./James River) forced a fumble. The ball took an Allegheny bounce, and was recovered by Allegheny's Ian Durci in the endzone for a touchdown.
It was the Tomcats' turn to get the ball.
Thiel was able to pick up three first downs, and finish the drive with a nine-yard touchdown pass from
Daniel Rennie (Cape Coral, Fla./Oasis) to
Blake Joseph (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) on a fourth-and-four from the Allegheny nine-yard line.
Thiel went on a 12-play, 77-yard drive to tie the game at 7-7.
On Allegheny's second drive of the game, Thiel was able to force a punt.
On the Tomcats' second drive of the game, they were forced into a third-and-seven at their own five-yard line. On the ensuing play, Rennie found Joseph streaking down the left sideline, who took it 95 yards to the endzone for his second touchdown of the game.
Joseph's 95-yard touchdown catch is tied for the fourth longest in PAC history.
Thiel had a chance to add to the lead heading into halftime, but Allegheny's Nigel Williams blocked the field goal.
On Allegheny's first drive of the second half, freshman linebacker
Robert Dixie (Youngstown, Ohio/Woodridge) recorded his first career interception, picking off Christian Coudriet at the Allegheny 45-yard line.
At the end of the third quarter, a pair of penalties killed an Allegheny drive, resulting in a punt.
Thiel would get their final touchdown of the day midway through the fourth quarter, when Rennie found
Jason Stone (Chester, Pa./Chester) on fourth-and-six on a slant route for a 36-yard touchdown.
Thiel was led by Rennie, who went 12-for-18 for 226 yards and three touchdowns.
Deon Logan (Richmond, Va./James River) led Thiel on the ground, rushing for 93 yards on 24 carries.
Through the air, Joseph caught four passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns. Stone caught three passes for 72 yards and one touchdown.
Defensively for the Tomcats,
Jake Badger (Mercer, Pa./Mercer Area) recorded 13 tackles.
Luke Faber (Greenville, Pa./Reynolds) recorded nine tackles, including three sacks.
Justin Logan (North Chesterfield, Va./James River) forced two fumbles, had a pass breakup and a blocked field goal. Dixie recorded seven tackles, including 1.5 sacks.
For Allegheny, Coudriet went 5-for-20 for 46 yards and one interception. Dominic Berarducci ran for 142 yards on 21 carries, while Austin Williams caught three passes for 24 yards.
Defensively, Azary Matsuda made eight tackles, while Jerome Williams II recorded seven tackles. Cameron George recorded six tackles and one sack.
The Tomcats head to Cleveland next weekend to take on the Case Western Reserve Spartans. The PAC game is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
