WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Thiel College softball team split a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games on the road Sunday against the Washington & Jefferson Presidents.
The Tomcats beat the Presidents 10-6 in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader. It was Thiel's first win over W&J since 2017.
Freshman infielder
Kylie Heid (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) got the Tomcats going in Game 1 with a leadoff homer to right center field.
Abby Rottman (Hilliards, Pa./Moniteau) followed later in first win an RBI-single to center field to give Thiel a 2-0 lead.
Thiel scored six runs in the third.
Julianna Sloan (Kingsville, Ohio/Edgewood) led off the third with a triple to left field and scored when
Kylee Yothers (Indian Head, Pa./Connellsville Area) singled to left center. Yothers scored when Rottman doubled to left center field.
Riley Ladd (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) followed with a single to left center, which scored Rottman.
Heid did the rest of the damage in the third when she jacked a three-run bomb to right center field to give the Tomcats an 8-0 lead.
Heid went 2-for-3 with four RBIs in Game 1. Rottman went 2-for-4 with three RBIs while Yothers went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Kayla Roddy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) earned the win in the first game. She allowed six runs on 13 hits with three strikeouts.
W&J eked out a 6-4 win in the second game.
Trailing 1-0, Thiel plated three runs in the second inning, two of which were scored on RBIs by Heid and Roddy.
After falling behind 5-3, Thiel made it a 1-run game in the top of the sixth when Heid hit an RBI-double to right field. W&J countered with a run in the bottom of the sixth and held on to split the doubleheader.
Heid went 4-for-4 in Game 2 with two RBIs. On the day, Heid went 6-for-7 with six RBIs, two home runs, two runs scored and a double.
Lauren Bonner (Hermitage, Pa./Reynolds) absorbed the loss in Game 2. She allowed five earned runs on seven hits.
The Tomcats will host the Allegheny Gators on Monday. The first game of the PAC doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
