WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team split a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games with the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets Tuesday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets walked off game one for a 4-3 win. However, the Tomcats would outpace the Yellow Jackets in game two, winning 15-14.
In game one, Thiel was led by
JT Gerle (Ambridge, Pa./Ambridge), who went 2-for-4.
Ethan Bintrim (New Castle, Pa./Shenango),
Nick Guarnieri (Niles, Ohio/Mckinley) and
Seth Johnson (Magnolia, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) each recorded an RBI.
Mike Sittig (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) also walked twice.
Nathan Doutt (Edinboro, Pa./General McClane) got the start in game one, going six innings, giving up three runs and striking out two.
Nate Lucas (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) pitched the final two innings, giving up one run in the loss.
Waynesburg was led by Lane Ours who went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Todd Burner went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Nolan Vertullo went 1-for-4 with an RBI, including the walk-off homerun.
Gavin Pratt went 6.1 innings, giving up all three runs. He struck out four and walked five.
In game two, the Tomcats took an early 2-0 from an Ethan Brintrim two-RBI double in the first inning. The Tomcats had an 11-7 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth. However, Waynesburg would score six in the bottom of the sixth to take a 13-11 lead.
In the top of the ninth,
JT Gerle (Ambridge, Pa./Ambridge) singled to left field to bring home
Colton Brightwell (Eighty Four, Pa./Bentworth). Two batters later,
Nick Guarnieri (Niles, Ohio/Mckinley) singled to left, driving in two runs to tie the game.
Chase Morrison (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) then singled to center field, clearing the bases to put the Tomcats up for good, 15-13.
Waynesburg would add a run in the bottom of the ninth, but Bintrim was able to shut the door on the Yellow Jackets.
The Tomcats had 23 hits in game two.
Thiel was led by Bintrim who went 4-for-6 with four RBIs.
Seth Johnson (Magnolia, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) also went 4-for-6 and recorded two RBIs. Chese Morrison recorded four RBIs, while
JT Gerle (Ambridge, Pa./Ambridge) recorded two RBIs.
Josh Daum (Tionesta, Pa./North Clarion) started game two, going 3.2 innings with one strikeout.
Cole Sherwin (Karns City, Pa./Karns City),
Garrison Martin (Beloit, Ohio/West Branch),
Nate Lucas (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) and
Ethan Bintrim (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) all pitched in relief. Bintrim also got his first win of the season.
Waynesburg was led by Bryce Bedilion who went 4-for-6 with two RBIs. Gavin Pratt went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Ethan Erhard started, going four innings, giving up six runs and striking out two.
The Tomcats return to PAC action on Saturday when they travel to Grove City for a doubleheader. The conference doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
