Tomcats split doubleheader with Barons

Katon pitched eight scoreless innings in game one against the Barons

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team split a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games with the Franciscan Barons Saturday afternoon.
 
The Tomcats shutout the Barons in game one, winning 9-0. However, the Barons got their bats going in game two, winning 8-1 to split the series.
 
In game one, the Tomcats jumped ahead to an early 4-0 lead behind Seth Johnson's (Magnolia, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) three-run homer to left field in the second inning. 
 
The Tomcats scored one run in the fifth inning, one in the sixth, and closed out the scoring with three runs in the eighth inning.
 
For the Tomcats, Seth Johnson (Magnolia, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) went 4-for-5 with five RBIs and a homerun. Chase Morrison (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) went 2-for-5 with one RBI, while Mike Sittig (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) went 2-for-4 with one RBI. Nick Guarnieri (Niles, Ohio/Mckinley), Calvin Cackowski (Wickliffe, Ohio/Wickliffe) Bintrim and Aidan Oches all recorded hits.
 
Alec Katon (Ashtabula, Ohio/Edgewood) started on the mound going eight innings of shutout baseball. He recorded six strikeouts and only one walk for his second win of the season. Cole Sherwin (Karns City, Pa./Karns City) pitched the final frame, giving up one hit and walking one.
 
Franciscan was led by Peter Falconite, going 2-for-3. Brendan Burke and Jesse Izzo both recorded two hits apiece.
 
Jeremy Sagun started for the Barons going five innings, giving up five runs and striking out two. Joseph Hurlbert and Jonathan Perez pitched in relief.
 
In game two, it was the Barons who jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, before the Tomcats cut into the deficit with one run in the sixth. But the Barons would add four runs in the ninth inning to finish the scoring. 
 
In game two, Calvin Cackowski (Wickliffe, Ohio/Wickliffe), Ethan Bintrim (New Castle, Pa./Shenango), Aidan Ochs (Rostraver Township, Pa./Belle Veron) and Mike Sittig (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) all recorded one hit apiece. Michael Aches (Pittsburgh, Pa./Canevin) recorded an RBI on a sacrifice fly.
 
Travis Harvey (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) started on the mound going seven innings, striking out one and walking one. Nate Lucas (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) and Josh Daum (Tionesta, Pa./North Clarion) pitched in relief.
 
Ryan Scavnicky led the Barons, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Peter Falconite went 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
 
Jesse Izzo started and got the win for the Barons, going 6.2 innings and walking four. 
 
The Tomcats return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Waynesburg for a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
