GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team won both games in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader against the Bethany Bison on Tuesday.
In game one, the Tomcats took an early 6-1 lead, building up a 13-1 lead through three innings. The game only went seven innings.
Seth Johnson (Magnolia, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) started the scoring with a double to right field that brought home
Colton Brightwell (Eighty Four, Pa./Bentworth). In the next at-bat,
Calvin Cackowski (Wickliffe, Ohio/Wickliffe) hit a sacrifice fly to bring home
Aidan Ochs (Rostraver Township, Pa./Belle Veron).
Nathen Prunty (Elyria, Ohio/Keystone) brought home Johnson, before
JT Gerle (Ambridge, Pa./Ambridge) and
Cole Sherwin (Karns City, Pa./Karns City) drove in three more runs.
The Tomcats added one run in the second inning, and rounded out the scoring by adding six more runs in the third.
Chase Morrison (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) led the Tomcats offensively, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs, while
Cole Sherwin (Karns City, Pa./Karns City) went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Brightwell, Ochs, Johnson and Prunty all recorded two hits apiece.
Calvin Cackowski (Wickliffe, Ohio/Wickliffe) went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Ian Mills (Alliance, Ohio/Marlington) got the start on the mound for the Tomcats, going five innings, striking out six and walking five. Mills only gave up two runs, with only one of them being earned. Mills also earned the win, his second of the season.
Josh Ickes (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) pitched the final two innings, walking two and giving up zero hits.
Bethany was led by Grant Schaffner who went 1-for-1 with one walk. Nick Roell went 1-for-4, while Tyler McKee went 1-for-1 and two walks.
Mark Lavezza started on the mound in game one for Bethany, going 2.1 innings, striking out 1 and giving up 11 runs, only four of which were earned. Kyle D'Angela pitched 3.2 innings, striking out five and only allowing two runs.
In game two, Bethany took an early 2-0 lead. But the Tomcats responded with three runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Bethany then added three runs in the second to take a 5-3 lead. The Tomcats took the lead back when they scored three runs in the fourth inning. However, Bethany tied it up in the fifth inning.
The Tomcats took the lead for good in the seventh inning on a
Calvin Cackowski (Wickliffe, Ohio/Wickliffe) homerun down the left field line.
The Tomcats were led by by
Nick Guarnieri (Niles, Ohio/Mckinley) who went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Colton Brightwell (Eighty Four, Pa./Bentworth) and
Aidan Ochs (Rostraver Township, Pa./Belle Veron) both went 2-for-5 with Brightwell also recording an RBI.
Ethan Bintrim (New Castle, Pa./Shenango),
JT Gerle (Ambridge, Pa./Ambridge) and
Cole Sherwin (Karns City, Pa./Karns City) all recorded on hit apiece.
Charlie Luedtke (Mars, Pa./Mars Area) pitched two innings giving up five runs, only two of which were earned.
Nathan Doutt (Edinboro, Pa./General McClane) pitched 5.2 innings in relief, striking out four and only allowing one run for his first collegiate win.
Ethan Bintrim (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) pitched 1.1 innings to close ou the win and earn his first save of the season.
Bethany was led by Tyler McKee who went 1-for-5 with 2 RBIs. Nick Roell went 2-for-4 and walked once.
Trey Mantle started for the Bison, going 6.1 innings, striking out three and giving up seven runs, three of which were earned. Zach Nolf pitched in relief, striking out one and not giving up a run.
The Tomcats are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Penn-State DuBois for a non-conference game. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:45 p.m.
