BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Thiel College men's volleyball team lost a pair of matches Saturday to the Geneva Golden Tornadoes and the Alderson Broaddus Battlers.
Geneva defeated Thiel in straight sets (25-19, 25-21, 26-24) in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) matchup.
Zac Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) led the Tomcats with 16 kills and nine digs against the Golden Tornadoes.
Jake Dies (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs) tallied seven kills and five digs while
Josh Pugh (Wexford, Pa./Pine Richland) handed out 30 assists.
Geneva's Byron Spear had 12 kills while Jake Williams registered 11 kills and nine digs.
The Battlers edged the Tomcats, 3-2. Thiel won the first two sets (28-26, 25-23), but Alderson Broaddus won the final three games (25-19, 25-19, 16-14) to earn the non-conference win.
JC Govannucci (North Huntington, Pa./Norwin) paced the Tomcats against the Battlers with 18 kills, 11 digs and six blocks.
David Gonzalez (El Paso, Texas/Eastwood) had 13 digs and 12 kills.
Colin Brooks recorded a game-best 20 kills for the Battlers. Nate Rogers had 18 kills while Andrew Haber notched 54 assists.
Thiel will host the Medaille Mavericks Wednesday at Maenpa Court at Beeghly Gymnasium. The AMCC match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
