Tomcats top Hawks, improve to 6-2 in AMCC play

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College men's volleyball team defeated the Hilbert Hawks in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) match, 3-1, Wednesday night.
 
The Tomcats won the first set, 25-16, before the Hawks tied the match up at 1-1, taking the second set 25-17.
 
Thiel won the final two sets 25-22, 25-15 to win the conference match.
 
Thiel was led by Zac Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) who recorded a team-high 12 kills to go along with 15 digs and five blocks. Jake Dies (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs) tallied 11 kills and five digs, while JC Govannucci (North Huntington, Pa./Norwin) recorded six kills and 13 digs. James Cromwell-Young (Virginia Beach, Va./Green Run) recorded nine digs and three blocks.
 
Freshman Cameron Long (Rock Hill, S.C./Legion Collegiate Academy) recorded a career-high 26 digs, the most in a four-set match since at least 2011, and the most in a match since Ryan Sumarsono recorded 26 digs against Geneva in 2019 in five-sets. Ethan Cooper (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) recorded a game-high 37 assists to go along with 10 digs.
 
Hilbert was led by Brad Converse who tallied a game-high 19 kills to go along with 10 digs. Austin Chandler recorded a team-best 16 digs, while Alex Overhoff recorded two blocks.
 
The Tomcats are idle this weekend before they head to Wells on Wednesday for an AMCC matchup. The conference game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
