WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Thiel College men's basketball team won a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game against the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets in double-overtime, 70-67, Wednesday night. This is the second time this season that Thiel has played a double-overtime game.
The Tomcats opened the game on a 14-7 run. But the Yellow Jackets closed the half with a 21-15 scoring run of their own, giving the Tomcats a 29-28 lead going into halftime.
The Tomcats started the second half with a 16-4 run, giving them a 13-point lead. But Waynesburg fought back, taking a two-point lead with 19 seconds left. Junior guard
Marlon Ellerbee (Temple Hills, Md./Oxon Hill) scored the game-tying layup with six seconds left to send the game to overtime.
In the first overtime, neither team scored in the final 1:21 seconds, sending the game to a second overtime.
The Tomcats never trailed in the second overtime, with Ellerbee hitting a two-point jumpshot with 12 seconds remaining to seal the victory.
The Tomcats were once again led by freshman guard
Elijah Harden (Sharon, Pa./Kennedy Catholic) who tallied a game-high 21 points to go along with four rebounds.
Beni Lavodrama (Washington, D.C./Phelps ACE) recorded his second double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 boards. Ellerbee also recorded a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Ellerbee also added a game-high six assists.
Rayshod Hooper (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy) notched 12 points to go along with seven boards.
Waynesburg was led by Antone Baker who recorded a double-double with 19 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Jansen Knotts recorded 19 points and seven rebounds, while Matt Popeck notched 14 points and one assist.
The Tomcats travel to PAC leaders Washington and Jefferson on Saturday. The conference game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
