Tomcats defeat Mavericks, fall to Golden Flyers to open season

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Thiel College men's volleyball team split a non-conference tri-match Saturday afternoon against the Medaille Mavericks and Nazareth Golden Flyers.
 
Thiel began the tri-match with a 3-2 (24-26, 25-13, 18-25, 25-21, 15-9) win over Medaille.
 
Zac Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) led the Tomcats with match-highs in kills (15) and digs (17). Connor McInnis (Southington, Conn./Southington) notched eight kills and three blocks. Cameron Long (Rock Hill, S.C.) recorded 12 digs. JC Govannucci (North Huntington, Pa./Norwin) tallied seven kills and five digs. Josh Pugh (Wexford, Pa./Pine Richland) recorded a team-high 25 assists to go along with six digs and two service aces. Jake Dies (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs) tallied four kills and 13 assists.
 
Malachi Jackson paced the Mavericks with 14 kills and eight digs. George Muriel recorded a team-best 11 digs and added 10 kills.
 
Thiel concluded the tri-match with a 3-0 (21-25, 16-25, 14-25) loss to the Nazareth Golden Flyers.
 
Smith led the Tomcats with six kills and four digs. James Cromwell-Young (Virginia Beach, Va./Green Run) added two kills and two blocks. Jake Dies (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs) tallied five kills, four digs and two assists. Pugh recorded a team-best nine assists. Tyler Hussey (Irwin, Pa./Norwin) also added two kills. 
 
Nazareth was led by Owen Wickens who tallied a match-best 11 kills to go along with six digs and 12 assists. Trent Caviness tallied six kills and a match-best 16 assists. 
 
The Tomcats will host the Carlow Celtics Thursday night at Maenpa Court at Beeghly Gymnasium. The non-conference match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
