Tomcats fall to Bearcats after delay

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team was defeated, 8-2 by the Saint Vincent Bearcats in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game on Saturday.

The Tomcats and Bearcats were originally scheduled to play a doubleheader; however, the start time was delayed, forcing the second game to be postponed due to darkness.

The Bearcats took an early 2-0 lead and kept the Tomcats off the board until the sixth inning. Entering the final two frames, the Tomcats trailed but remained close with the score at 3-1. A four-run eighth inning gave the Bearcats a 7-1 lead and they would hold on to win 8-2. Seven of the Bearcats' eight runs were unearned as the Tomcats' four fielding errors proved costly.

Anthony Rago (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) notched two doubles out of the leadoff spot. Nick Guarnieri (Niles, Ohio/Mckinley) also notched two hits and scored a run. Nick Jacobs (New Castle, Pa./Union) had a hit and an RBI. Adam Walker (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) walked in his only plate appearance and came around to score a run.

On the mound, Travis Harvey (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) was charged with the loss in 7 innings pitched. He allowed no earned runs (three unearned) on three hits, four walks, and four strikeouts. Max Siguenza (Sharpsville, Pa./Sharpsville) allowed one earned run and three unearned runs in an inning of work with a strikeout. Will Brandsema (Orlando, Fla./Cypress Creek) allowed an unearned run in an inning of relief.

For the Bearcats, Justin Wright hit a triple with two RBIs and a run. On the mound, Jeremy Kruezweiser earned the win in 6.2 innings of one-run ball (none earned) with six strikeouts. Casey Jones struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth inning.

The Tomcats will look to bounce back when they head to Saint Vincent for a doubleheader to complete the series on Monday starting at 1 p.m.
