LATROBE, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team lost two games in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader against the Saint Vincent Bearcats on Monday.
In the first game, the Bearcats took an early 4-1 lead in the second. The Tomcats came back to take a 6-5 lead in the top of the sixth, but the Bearcats responded with a six-run bottom of the sixth to take the lead and eventually win, 11-6. The Tomcats notched seven extra-base hits in the seven-inning game.
Jamin Wentling (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) homered, doubled, singled, and got hit by a pitch in a 3-for-3 game with two RBIs and two runs.
Anthony Rago (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) tallied four hits, including his second home run of the season.
Nathen Prunty (Elyria, Ohio/Keystone) and
Trey Williams (Jeromesville, Ohio/Hillsdale) each went 2-for-4 with a run. Prunty doubled twice and Williams doubled once.
Nick Guarnieri (Niles, Ohio/Mckinley) reached base four times and notched an RBI and a run.
On the mound, Crooks started and struck out six in five innings.
Dillon Belknap (Lagrange, Ohio/Keystone) was charged with the loss in two-thirds of an inning.
In game two, the pitchers dueled until the Bearcats broke the tie with a three-run fifth. The Tomcats answered with a five-run sixth and a run in the seventh to take a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Saint Vincent recorded three runs in both the seventh and eighth and hung on in the ninth to win, 9-7.
Wentling homered again in game two, his third home run of the season.
Patrick Shirey (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington),
Chase Morrison (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley), and
Mike Sittig (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) each tallied two hits. Shirey knocked in two runs and Morrison knocked in a run and scored a run.
Dan Lutz (Loveland, Ohio/Milford) hit a two-run double and later scored. Williams and
Derek Knapp (Warren, Pa./Warren) each notched a hit. Williams scored a run and Knapp drove in a run.
Alex Lutz (Loveland, Ohio/Milford) registered a quality start in six innings of three-run ball with two strikeouts in a no-decision. He allowed just four hits and one walk.
Max Siguenza (Sharpsville, Pa./Sharpsville) was charged with the loss in relief.
Will Brandsema (Orlando, Fla./Cypress Creek) tossed a 1-2-3 inning in relief with a strikeout.
For Saint Vincent, TJ Dailey hit a grand slam and an RBI-double for five RBIs in game one. Tristan Bedillion got the win in relief. Billy Perroz hit a solo home run in game two. Jacob Polosky got the win in relief and Tyler Chrise recorded the save.
The Tomcats will host the Allegheny Gators tomorrow for a non-conference game at 4 p.m.
