PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team won both games of a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader against the Chatham Cougars on Saturday.
The Tomcats kicked off the doubleheader with a nine-run first inning to give the Tomcats a comfortable lead early. Neither offense let up as the Tomcats won 18-7.
Trey Williams (Jeromesville, Ohio/Hillsdale) smashed a pair of home runs: a grand slam and a three-run home run. He also doubled, singled, and totaled seven RBIs and three runs.
Anthony Rago (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) notched four hits, including a double, and four runs. It was Rago's seventh consecutive multi-hit game.
Seth Johnson (Magnolia, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) drove in three and scored two runs on two hits, including a triple.
Jamin Wentling (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) and
Adam Walker (Mercer, Pa./Mercer) each went 3-for-5. Wentling doubled with two RBIs and a run, while Walker had two runs, an RBI, and a stolen base.
Derek Knapp (Warren, Pa./Warren) also registered two runs and an RBI.
Chase Morrison (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) drove in a run and scored a run.
On the mound,
Will Brandsema (Orlando, Fla./Cypress Creek) struck out five in 4.1 innings to earn the win.
Nathan Lucas (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) allowed just one run in 2.2 innings of relief.
In game two, the Tomcats saw themselves down 5-0 entering the ninth inning. The Thiel bats went to work with a seven-run ninth inning and held on in the bottom to win 7-6.
Morrison led the Tomcats with three hits and a run in game two. Rago added a hit, a run, a stolen base, and an RBI. Johnson, Wentling,
Nick Jacobs (New Castle, Pa./Union), Knapp, and
Dan Lutz (Loveland, Ohio/Milford) each also scored a run in the ninth inning.
On the mound,
Max Siguenza (Sharpsville, Pa./Sharpsville) allowed just one hit and two runs (one earned) with five strikeouts in 6.1 innings of work.
Dillon Belknap (Lagrange, Ohio/Keystone) earned his first collegiate win after getting the final out of the eighth on a strikeout.
Travis Harvey (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) registered his first save of the season in the ninth inning.
The Tomcats will look to extend their five-game winning streak as they head to Westminster on Wednesday to take on the Titans at 4 p.m.
