BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team split a doubleheader against the Geneva Golden Tornadoes at Geneva on Saturday.
The Golden Tornadoes won 5-2 in game one and the Tomcats won 11-8 in game two.
In game one, the Tomcats were held scoreless until a two-run ninth inning.
Anthony Rago (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) hit a double.
Dan Lutz (Loveland, Ohio/Milford) stole a base and scored a run.
Nick Jacobs (New Castle, Pa./Union) also scored a run and
Chase Morrison (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) drove in a run. On the mound,
Max Siguenza (Sharpsville, Pa./Sharpsville) pitched 5.1 innings and allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits with one strikeout.
Will Brandsema (Orlando, Fla./Cypress Creek) finished the game in two-thirds of an inning with a strikeout.
In game two, the Tomcats scored at least one run in each of the first six innings, including three in the first and fourth innings, en route to the 11-8 victory.
Jacobs notched four hits on two doubles and a triple and drove in four runs.
Seth Johnson (Magnolia, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) and
Ethan Bintrim (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) both went 3-for-5 with three and two runs, respectively. Rago also tallied three hits, including two more doubles.
Alec Katon (Ashtabula, Ohio/Edgewood) tossed six innings of one-run ball with a career-high eight strikeouts to earn his first victory of the season.
Tyler Roddy (Nassau, N.Y./Columbia) allowed just one hit in 1.2 shutout innings in relief in his first varsity appearance.
For Geneva, Jarrett Orbin allowed just one run on three hits in six innings to earn the win in game one. Jackson Hall went 3-for-3 with two runs in the first game and 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run in game two. Dillon Bickerton reached base four times with two hits, two RBIs and a run in the second game.
The Tomcats will be back at home to take on the Bethany Bison on Monday at 4 p.m.
