Tomcats honor seniors against Cougars

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College softball team lost a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) games to the Chatham Cougars Friday at Tomcat Park. Chatham won the first game 6-5 and the second game 4-3.

The Cougars took the lead in the top of the first inning of the first game, but the Tomcats tied up the game in the bottom of the first when Julianna Sloan (Kingsville, Ohio/Edgewood) hit an RBI-single to left field.

Thiel took a 4-1 lead in the fourth. Kylee Yothers (Indian Head, Pa./Connellsville Area) drove in a pair of runs on a double to center field. Kayla Roddy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) also doubled in the fourth to drive in a run.

The Cougars plated five runs in the sixth to take a 6-4 lead. In the seventh, the Tomcats had two runners on base with one out but were only able to score one run, which came on Melina Bufalini's (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) single up the middle. Chatham pitcher Emily Nay got out of the jam with a pair of groundouts.

Nay allowed five earned runs on 12 hits. She issued four walks and recorded two strikeouts. Roddy allowed two earned runs on six hits. She struck out two batters and gave up three walks.

Dani Ficeti (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) went 2-for-2 in the first game. Bufalini went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Yothers went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Casey Buechel (Allison Park, Pa./Deer Lakes) also went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Trailing 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth of the second game, the Tomcats cut the lead down to 3-2 thanks to RBI-singles by Ficeti and Buechel.

The Cougars scored an insurance run in the sixth. In the seventh, the Tomcats loaded the bases with no outs but Nay, who entered the circle in relief, held the Tomcats to just one run to earn the save. Sloan drove in the run on a single to right field.

Nay preserved the win for the Cougars with a strikeout and a pair of infield popups.

Mackenzie Dunn earned the win. In five innings, she allowed one earned run on six hits while recording three strikeouts. Lauren Bonner (Hermitage, Pa./Reynolds) allowed two earned runs on 10 hits. She struck out three batters and allowed three walks.

Yothers went 4-for-4 in the second game with a double and a run scored. Ficeti went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Buechel and Lauren Durboraw (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) were recognized between games with Senior Day.

The Tomcats are scheduled to play the Westminster Titans on the road Monday. The first game of the PAC doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
