STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – The Thiel College softball team defeated the Franciscan Barons in both games of a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) doubleheader on Wednesday.
In game one, the Tomcats and Barons were tied at one heading into the seventh inning. The Tomcats put four more runs on the board in the final frame to win 5-1.
Abby Rottman (Hilliards, Pa./Moniteau) hit her second home run of the season; a three-run shot in the seventh inning.
Kylee Yothers (Indian Head, Pa./Connellsville Area) and
Riley Ladd (Mineral Ridge, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) each notched two hits, including a double. Ladd scored twice and Yothers scored once and drove in a run. Pitcher
Kayla Roddy (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills) allowed just one run in seven innings and struck out four with no walks to earn the win.
In game two, Franciscan led 5-2 after two innings. The Tomcats took control with four runs in both the third and fourth innings. The Tomcats held the Barons off the board the rest of the game and added a run in the seventh to win 11-5. Each Tomcats' hitter registered at least one hit and one run or RBI.
Rottman followed up her home run in game one with a 2-for-2 game with a triple, a run, and three RBIs.
Dani Ficeti (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) also notched two hits, including a double, with three RBIs and a run.
Casey Buechel (Allison Park, Pa./Deer Lakes) hit her second home run of the season.
Julianna Sloan (Kingsville, Ohio/Edgewood) and Yothers each tallied two hits, a run, and an RBI.
Lauren Bonner (Hermitage, Pa./Reynolds) earned the win in seven innings of five-run ball with two strikeouts.
For Franciscan, Rachel Cooper went 3-for-3 in game one and hit a two-run home run in game two. Jenny Massey also hit a two-run home run in the second game.
The Tomcats will have their senior day on Saturday as they host the Chatham Cougars for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
