Thiel bats stay hot in dominant win over Rockford

FORT MYERS, Pa. – The Thiel College baseball team defeated the Rockford Regents, 18-8, in the Gene Cusic Classic on Wednesday.
 
Rockford took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, but the Tomcats also began the game with a four-run first inning. Six singles gave the Tomcats a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the first.
 
Thiel starter Max Siguenza (Sharpsville, Pa./Sharpsville) settled down and didn't allow a run the rest of his outing. The Tomcats however, added insurance plenty of insurance runs. In the fourth inning, the Tomcats scored 10 runs to take a 14-1 lead. Jamin Wentling (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) hit a grand slam in the inning. It was the second-consecutive game that the Tomcats hit a grand slam.
 
The Tomcats added four more runs and took an 18-1 lead in the sixth inning. The Regents added seven more runs to bring the score to 18-8, but the Tomcat lead was insurmountable.
 
Wentling led the Tomcats with four RBIs and added three hits and two runs, including the grand slam. Dan Lutz (Loveland, Ohio/Milford) was a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Chase Morrison (Monaca, Pa./Central Valley) tallied three hits, three RBIs, and two runs. Trey Williams (Jeromesville, Ohio/Hillsdale) reached base three times with two hits and a walk. He led the Tomcats with three runs in the contest.
 
Nick Jacobs (New Castle, Pa./Union) and Nick Guarnieri (Niles, Ohio/Mckinley) each notched two RBIs. Jacobs and Guarnieri also scored two runs and one run, respectively. Patrick Shirey (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) scored two runs and recorded a hit in his first varsity start as a Tomcat.
 
Max Siguenza (Sharpsville, Pa./Sharpsville) earned the win and the quality start with six innings pitched and six strikeouts. He only allowed one run on four hits. Charlie Luedtke (Mars, Pa./Mars Area) made his Tomcat debut and struck out three in a shutout inning.
 
For the Rockford Regents, Aaron Monti hit a grand slam. Starter Jake Dahl was charged with the loss, allowing eight runs in three innings. Hunter Svec pitched 2.2 shutout innings and allowed just one hit.
 
The Tomcats take on the Plymouth State Panthers tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. at the Player Development Complex.
