GREENVILLE, Pa. – Thiel College head football coach
Sam Bauman recently announced the hires of assistant coaches
David Durish and
Derrell Johnson-Koulianos.
Durish, who has nearly three decades of coaching experience at all three levels, will serve as Thiel's offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Johnson-Koulianos will be the team's pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
Durish was the offensive line coach and academic liaison for Division II California University of Pennsylvania since 2016. He helped the Vulcans win the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) title in 2016 and make two NCAA playoff appearances. The Vulcans owned the highest-scoring offense in Division II in 2016 (49.6 p/g).
"Dave is a proven winner who brings a ton of experience with him to Thiel," Bauman said. "He is a great teacher and really understands the ins and outs of the game of football. I am excited to see the growth our offense will experience under Coach Durish."
From 2006 through 2015, Durish held multiple titles at Division II Clarion University, most notably as the team's offensive coordinator from 2006-12. Under Durish, the Golden Eagles averaged 387.6 yards per game in 2012 while the 2009 team averaged 28.6 points per game.
Durish began his career as a graduate assistant at Clarion in 1993. After serving as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Ohio Wesleyan University in 1996, he returned to Clarion as the team's offensive line coach for the 1997 and 1998 seasons. Durish also served as an assistant coach at Georgia Southern University, the University of Illinois, Millikin University and Case Western Reserve University.
Durish earned a bachelor's degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a master's degree from Clarion University.
Johnson-Koulianos coached quarterbacks and wide receivers at Division II Bloomsburg University the last two years. He also spent six years as an assistant high school coach.
A three-time All-State First Team quarterback at Cardinal Mooney High School in Youngstown, Ohio, Johnson-Koulianos competed in the 2005 Big 33 all-star game and went on to be named the Ohio team's MVP.
"DJ has an energy about him that is second to none," said Bauman. "He is a great coach who possesses knowledge of how this game is played at the highest level. Coach Johnson-Koulianos is also a tireless recruiter with deep ties to our area, which will be a huge asset for our staff."
Johnson-Koulianos went on to star as a wide receiver for the University of Iowa, where he earned a bachelor's degree. A two-time All-Big 10 First Team selection, Johnson-Koulianos was Iowa's career leader in receiving yards (2,616) and catches (173) at the time of his graduation.
The Tomcats will open the 2022 season on Saturday, September 3 when they face the Montclair State University Red Hawks on the road. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
