ERIE, Pa. – The Thiel College men's volleyball team split an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) tri-match hosted by Penn State Behrend on Saturday.
The Tomcats won the first match against the Saint Vincent Bearcats, 3-1 and lost 3-1 in the second match against the Penn State Behrend Lions.
Against the Bearcats, the Tomcats were topped in the first set, 25-21. The Tomcats responded by comfortably winning the next two sets, 25-16 and 25-14. The fourth set was close, but the Tomcats prevailed 25-23 to win the match.
Colton Greenlee (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) led the Tomcats with 11 kills and four blocks.
Zac Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks),
Jacob Smeltzer (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley), and
JC Govannucci (North Huntington, Pa./Norwin) tallied eight, seven, and seven kills, respectively.
Brandon Millias (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse ) and
Ethan Scott (Glenn Rock, Pa./Dallastown ) recorded 19 and 15 assists, respectively.
Ricky Castillo (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way West) and
Jake Dies (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs) notched six digs apiece.
For the Bearcats, Matthew Minkin recorded 14 kills. Matthew Furrer notched 29 assists and four digs.
Against the Lions, Penn State Behrend won the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-12. The Tomcats won the third set 25-23, but were defeated in the fourth set, 25-20.
Smith led the team with 19 kills and eight digs. Govannucci notched 11 kills. Scott and Millias tallied 26 and 14 assists, respectively. Millias also added seven digs, along with Castillo. Greenlee led the Tomcats with three blocks.
For the Lions, JP Goodsel notched 16 kills and 10 digs. Owen Wienczkowski led the game with seven blocks.
The Tomcats play their last home match of the season against the Hiram Terriers on senior night this Wednesday at 7 p.m.
