GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College men's volleyball team hosted the Medaille Mavericks and Penn State Altoona Lions in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) tri-match in Beeghly Gymnasium on Saturday.
Penn State Altoona topped Thiel in the opening match, 3-2. The Tomcats bounced back to win the final match of the day against the Mavericks, 3-1.
Penn State Altoona won the first set against Thiel, 25-20. The Tomcats edged the Lions in the next two sets, both 25-23. However, the Lions came back to win the fourth set, 25-13 and the fifth set 15-7.
David Gonzalez (El Paso, Texas/Eastwood) led Thiel with 12 kills and tallied seven digs.
Jacob Smeltzer (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) and
Zac Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) recorded 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
Nick Koorsen (North Myrtle Beach, S.C./Shaler Area) led the team with nine digs.
Brandon Millias (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse ) and
Ethan Scott (Glenn Rock, Pa./Dallastown ) notched 26 and 16 assists, respectively.
Jake Dies (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs) finished with three service aces, three block assists, and a solo block.
For the Lions, Philip Silva led the game with 16 kills and 14 digs. Connor Baker tallied 49 assists.
Against Medaille, the Tomcats edged the Mavericks, 30-28 in the first set. The Mavericks tied the match up at one, winning the second match 25-22. Thiel, however, won the last two sets 25-18 and 25-21 to win the match.
Colton Greenlee (Cochranton, Pa./Cochranton) led the Tomcats with 14 kills and three block assists in the win. Smeltzer and
JC Govannucci (North Huntington, Pa./Norwin) notched nine and eight kills, respectively. Gonzalez tallied 14 digs and six kills.
Nick Koorsen (North Myrtle Beach, S.C./Shaler Area) notched nine digs. Millias and Scott finished with 23 and 14 assists, respectively. The pair also recorded six digs apiece.
The Tomcats moved to 6-4 in the conference and will travel to Geneva to take on the Golden Tornadoes in an AMCC match on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
