Tomcats split AMCC tri-match

ALTOONA, Pa. – The Thiel College men's volleyball team went 1-1 Saturday in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) tri-match at Penn State Altoona.
 
The Tomcats defeated the Hilbert Hawks 3-0 in their first match of the day by set scores of 25-20, 27-25, 25-15.
 
JC Govannucci (North Huntington, Pa./Norwin) led Thiel with 11 kills against Hilbert while also contributing four digs and three blocks. David Gonzalez (El Paso, Texas/Eastwood) and Jake Dies (Cambridge Springs, Pa./Cambridge Springs) recorded 10 kills apiece. Ethan Scott (Glenn Rock, Pa./Dallastown ) tallied a match-best 33 assists while Ricky Castillo (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way West) led all players with 11 digs.
 
Brad Converse paced the Mavericks with 11 kills and eight digs.
 
The Penn State Altoona Lions defeated the Tomcats 3-0 in the final match of the day by set scores of 26-24, 25-22, 25-23.
 
Dies registered 13 kills, five blocks and five digs against the Lions. Zac Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) recorded 13 digs and eight kills while Gonzalez collected eight kills and five digs. Scott handed out 35 assists while Castillo notched 10 digs.
 
Trey Sadler and Jared Bodisch led the Lions with 10 kills apiece. Connor Baker recorded 33 assists and 12 digs.
 
The Tomcats will face the Hiram Terriers on the road Wednesday. The AMCC match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
