ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Thiel College women's volleyball team opened play in the Mount Union Invitational Friday with a pair of 3-1 losses to Carnegie Mellon and Wooster.
Against Carnegie Mellon, Thiel lost the first two sets (25-23, 25-11) before winning the third set (25-15). The Tartans went on to win the fourth set, 25-12.
Maria Torres (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) led the Tomcats with a match-best 12 kills against the Tartans.
Katie Stamp (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) contributed seven kills.
Danielle Aulet (Austintown, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) recorded 18 assists while
Erica Gregory (Clinton Township, Mich./Fraser) tallied 11 digs and five kills.
Laura Reichard and Jane Dean combined for 21 kills to lead the Tartans.
Against Wooster, Thiel lost the first set (25-15) but rebounded to win the second set (25-17). However, the Fighting Scots went on to win the third (29-27) and fourth (25-20) sets.
Torres recorded 10 kills and 10 digs against the Fighting Scots.
Kylee Eaton (Parker, Pa./AC Valley) registered 22 digs and six kills while Gregory notched 24 digs. Aulet handed out 35 assists and 10 digs.
Hayley Nash led Wooster with 18 digs and 14 kills. Syd Case registered 41 assists and 18 digs.
The Tomcats will conclude play in the Mount Union Invitational Saturday. Thiel will face Mount Union at 10 a.m. and SUNY Geneseo at noon.
