GREENVILLE, Pa. - The Thiel College men's soccer team was defeated, 1-0, by the Penn State Altoona Lions Thursday evening.
The teams were scoreless through the first half and into the second until the Lions scored with less than 13 minutes left off of a deflection from a corner kick. The 1-0 lead would hold in the final minutes as Penn State Altoona held on to win.
For the Tomcats, Brock Newsome (Clyde, Ohio/Clyde), Evan Kosenina (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny), and Dakota King (Parker, Pa./Karns City) each recorded shots on goal. Chase Yopp (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) and Garret Smith (Warren, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) tallied two shots apiece. In the first half, goalkeeper Devin Weisbarth (Akron, Ohio/Norton) shutout the Lions with six saves. Noah Brieck (Kensington, Ohio/United Local) played in goal in the second half and recorded two saves.
For the Lions, Grady Ballard registered five shots on goal. Ciaran Corr attempted five shots, with two on goal. Goalkeeper Tommy Packevicz completed the shutout with three saves.
The Tomcats will look to bounce back when they take on the Bluffton Beavers on the road on Saturday. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
