HIRAM, Ohio – The Thiel College men's soccer team was defeated, 2-1, in a non-conference game against the Defiance Yellow Jackets in Hiram Saturday evening.
The teams were scoreless in the first half. Less than four minutes into the second half, the Yellow Jackets opened the scoring with a goal. It took the Tomcats less than four minutes to answer with a goal of their own. The 1-1 tie was broken by the Yellow Jackets with just under 11 minutes to play and they held the lead to win 2-1.
For the Tomcats,
Garret Smith (Warren, Ohio/Mineral Ridge) scored the lone goal, his first goal as a Tomcat.
Anthony Phillips (Hanoverton, Ohio/United Local) recorded an assist on the goal.
Chase Yopp (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) took three shots, one on goal.
Muataz Alqass Ishaq (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks) recorded two shots on goal. Goalkeeper
Devin Weisbarth (Akron, Ohio/Norton) tallied eight saves, giving him 19 saves and just two goals allowed in two games at the Hiram Tournament.
For the Yellow Jackets, Armando Campos-Ortiz scored the first goal. Erdwin Quintana scored the go-ahead goal and was assisted by Darrien Brooks. Goalkeeper Orry Killam notched three saves.
The Tomcats' next game will be home against Penn State Altoona on Thursday. The match is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
