Cougars hand Tomcats first loss in comeback

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College women's lacrosse team lost, 14-12, to the Chatham Cougars in Tuesday's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game.
 
The Tomcats gained an early advantage with four goals in the first 11:01 (18:59 mark). The Cougars got on the board shortly after at the 18:03 mark and the Tomcats answered back to bring the score to 5-1. The Cougars clawed out of the early deficit with five unanswered goals to take a 6-5 lead.
 
The Tomcats responded with a 6-2 run spanning the rest of the first half and 11 minutes into the second half, led by three goals apiece from Destiny Johnson (Baltimore, Md./Western) and Ashlyn Wightman (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler). Thiel held an 11-8 lead until the 10:46 mark in the second half when the Cougars began to take control. The Cougars finished the game from that point on with a 6-1 run to win 14-12.
 
The Tomcats were led by Johnson with five goals, an assist, and three caused turnovers. Ashlyn Wightman (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) finished with three goals and team-highs with four ground balls and seven draw controls. Mackenzie Quinn (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) added two goals, two assists, and three ground balls. Juanima Van Zandt (Baltimore, Md./Edmonson West) and Maddy Wightman (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) each chipped in a goal and an assist. Madison Liggett (Baltimore, Md./Catholic) and Emily Ramous (Bridgeville, Pa./Chartiers Valley) combined for 15 saves in the contest.
 
For Chatham, Bria Braddock scored five goals. Both Rachel Belles and Darryn Sleeman scored three goals. Aria Dietrich had eight saves in the win.
 
The Tomcats will look to bounce back when they head to Franciscan to take on the Barons in a PAC contest Saturday at noon.
